Doctor's Corner: Your Questions About Ventolin Answered By A Pharmacist

UK Meds spoke with NHS Senior Clinical Pharmacist, Irsalan Ahmed, to get answers to the common questions you’ve asked us about the asthma treatment, Ventolin (Salbutamol). You’ll find the answers to all of your frequently asked questions below.

    Ventolin FAQs

Below are a selection of your most common questions about Ventolin (Salbutamol) that we asked Irsalan:

    How effective is Ventolin?

Ventolin (which contains the active ingredient Salbutamol) is very effective at quickly relieving symptoms of asthma or other breathing problems, like shortness of breath, wheezing, or chest tightness. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways, making it easier to breathe

What dosage of Ventolin should I use?

The dosage of Ventolin varies depending on factors such as your age, condition, and the advice of your healthcare provider.

Typically, for adults, the dose is 1-2 puffs when needed (max. 4 times / 24 hours regardless of whether you have 1-2 puffs at a time).

It's essential to follow your doctor/healthcare provider's instructions for the appropriate dosage that is right for you and your needs

How should I clean my Ventolin inhaler?

The method of cleaning depends on the type of inhaler device you have. The most common type of Ventolin device patients use is pMDI but this answer will also cover the alternative DPI (check the product literature inside the medication box to see which device you have).

To clean your pMDI Ventolin inhaler:

    • Remove the metal canister from the plastic casing

    • Rinse the plastic casing under warm water

    • Allow it to air dry completely before reassembling it (usually overnight)

    • Put the metal canister into the plastic casing and test by releasing a single puff into the air

    • Replace the mouthpiece cap and use as appropriate

To clean your DPI Ventolin inhaler:

    • Wipe the mouthpiece of your inhaler with a clean, dry cloth at least once a week (never with a wet cloth as the powder can be sensitive)

Note: For both of the above, it is advised you keep a spare Ventolin inhaler to use whilst cleaning your main Ventolin inhaler in case symptoms occur in the interim.

Does a Ventolin Inhaler contain steroids?

No, a Ventolin inhaler does not contain steroids. Its active ingredient is Salbutamol, a type of medication known as a bronchodilator, which acts on beta-2 agonists on the lungs and thus helps to open up your airways

How do you use a Ventolin inhaler?

To use a Ventolin pMDI inhaler:

    • Shake the inhaler well (usually 4-5 times)

    • Breathe out fully to empty your lungs

    • Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and seal your lips around it (do not bite)

    • Press down on the canister to release a dose while breathing in deeply and slowly

    • Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly

    • Replace the mouthpiece cover after use to prevent dust accumulation

    • For a 2nd dose, wait 30 seconds and repeat the steps above

(A spacer can help to assist with inhaler technique if you’re struggling with pMDI technique, ask your doctor/community pharmacist about this)

To use a Ventolin DPI inhaler:

    • Hold the outer casing in one hand whilst using the thumb on the other hand to push away the thumb grip on the device. Do this until a click is heard and you should see a small hole in the mouthpiece

    • Slide the visible lever away from you until you hear another click, this signals that a dose is ready for you to use

    • Hold the Ventolin inhaler away from your mouth and breathe out fully to empty your lungs

    • Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and seal your lips around it.

    • Breathe in steadily and deeply to inhale powder

    • Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly

    • For a 2nd dose, wait 30 seconds and repeat steps above

If symptoms are not relieved/worsening after repeated use, seek medical attention

An online demonstration for both inhalers can also be found at Right Breathe.

    How does Salbutamol work?

Salbutamol works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, which helps them open up. This makes breathing easier and quickly relieves symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath.

Does Ventolin come with any precautions?

Yes, there are some precautions, and you should always notify your doctor/healthcare provider if you have any of the following:

    • Your asthma is active (e.g. frequent flare-ups/symptoms) where additional inhalers such as corticosteroids may also be needed

    • Don’t use it more often than prescribed

What are common side effects of a Ventolin inhaler?

    Common side effects include:

    • Tremors and/or shakiness

    • A fast/irregular heartbeat

    • Headaches

    • Feeling nervous or anxious

These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own.

Can Ventolin interact with alcohol and food?

Can Ventolin interact with other medications?

How long does a Ventolin Inhaler last?

The duration a Ventolin inhaler lasts depends on how often you use it. Typically, an inhaler with 200 doses will last about a month if you use it 2-3 times per day. Always ensure you order your Ventolin from your community pharmacy early when running low.

Do you need a prescription for a Ventolin inhaler?

Yes, Ventolin requires a prescription from an appropriate healthcare provider.

What is the difference between Salbutamol and Ventolin Inhalers?

What is the correct way to store your Ventolin Inhaler?

Store your Ventolin inhaler at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the cap on the mouthpiece whilst not in use to prevent any dust accumulation.

How should you dispose of a Ventolin Inhaler?

It is recommended to return your Ventolin inhaler to your community pharmacy for proper disposal. Don’t throw it away due to the pressurised canister.

Can you use a Ventolin Inhaler for hay fever?

Ventolin is not licensed for use in hay fever, but it can help if hay fever triggers asthma-like symptoms, such as wheezing or shortness of breath. Hay fever should always be treated with licensed medications such as antihistamines if appropriate.

Can you use a Ventolin Inhaler when pregnant?

Ventolin generally can be used during pregnancy. However, always speak to your doctor/healthcare provider first before using Ventolin in pregnancy and make them aware you are pregnant.

Can you use a Ventolin Inhaler when breastfeeding?

Ventolin is generally considered safe to use while breastfeeding. However, always speak to your doctor/healthcare provider first before using Ventolin in breastfeeding and make them aware you are breast-feeding.

No, Ventolin does not affect contraception

Can you use a Ventolin Inhaler for asthma?

Yes, Ventolin is licensed for use to treat asthma symptoms and is often referred to as a "rescue inhaler" because it can provide quick relief during an asthma attack.

What's the difference between a Ventolin Inhaler and a Salamol Easi-Breathe?

Both contain Salbutamol, but the Salamol Easi-Breathe inhaler is breath-actuated, meaning the release of the medication is triggered by your breath. Different formulations are used by different patients based on their personal preference/ease of use.

What's the difference between a Ventolin Inhaler and a Clenil Modulite?

Ventolin contains Salbutamol, a bronchodilator, while Clenil Modulite contains beclometasone, a corticosteroid. Clenil Modulite is used for long-term asthma control whilst Ventolin is used as a short-term reliever when necessary.

Is Ventolin the only type of inhaler?

No, there are various types of inhalers, including those that contain different medications like corticosteroids for long-term control (e.g., Clenil) or other bronchodilators. Ventolin is just one type used for quick relief. Always speak to your doctor/healthcare provider for an inhaler regime that is tailored to your medical needs.
