A Doctor's Overview

GP and surgeon, Dr Shane Charles (MBBS, MRCS, PgDip SEM) provides a simple explanation of the medication below:

'Detrusitol is a medication used in the treatment of overactive bladder and works by reducing bladder contractions. '.

Detrusitol XL is used for the treatment of the symptoms of urinary incontinence. It is an antimuscarinic medication. Detrusitol is given to patients with overactive bladder syndrome or urge incontinence. They are available in a prolonged release form called Detrusitol XL.

Detrusitol is a slow release treatment, which means that the medication is gradually absorbed into the bloodstream throughout the course of the day. The active ingredient, Tolterodine, increases the amount of urine that the bladder can retain.

Overactive bladder syndrome is unpleasant and embarrassing. This condition will make you unable to control your urination, needing to go to the toilet frequently or rush to the toilet with no advance warning. Sneezing, coughing, or weight exercises may cause an unexpected urine leak from the bladder. There are various reasons why people suffer from this condition, including getting older, certain types of surgery, pregnancy, and being overweight.

For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Detrusitol patient information leaflet.

Detrusitol XL contains tolterodine, which works by relaxing the involuntary muscle located at the wall of the bladder.

This muscle in the wall of the bladder is called the detrusor muscle. It can, at times, have uncontrollable spasms, in a condition called overactive bladder. The detrusor muscle, which becomes overactive, can increase the frequency of passing urine, or result in uncontrollable urges urinate, or have involuntary leakage of urine.

Tolterodine works by relaxing the detrusor muscle in the wall of the bladder. This is done by blocking the muscarinic receptors on the surface of the muscle cells. This will prevent a natural chemical called acetylcholine from acting on the receptors.

Normally, the acetylcholine acting on the receptors will cause the detrusor muscle to contract and the bladder to empty. By blocking acetylcholine, tolterodine helps the bladder wall muscle to relax, reducing the unstable, involuntary contractions of the bladder and thereby increasing the capacity of the bladder to hold urine. In turn, it reduces the need to pass urine.

Detrusitol XL is an immediate-release dose form, which means that it is absorbed into the bloodstream from the gut soon after the tablets were taken, resulting in an immediate effect.

The main benefit of this medication is its ability to relax the muscles on the wall of the bladder thus preventing overactive bladder.

Read and keep the product information leaflet of this medication that comes with the package. Read it again each time you have a question on how to use it properly. If you have any further questions that cannot be answered by the leaflet, ask your doctor.

This medication is prescribed by your doctor just for you. Do not pass it on to others as it may harm them even if they have the same symptoms as yours.

Take Detrusitol XL with food and drink. It may be taken before, during, or after a meal.

The prolonged release capsules are intended for oral use and should be swallowed whole, without chewing or breaking the capsule.

Take Detrusitol XL at about the same time each day to help you remember that you are supposed to take a dose. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is very close to the next dose. If it is too close to the next dose, just skip the missed dose and proceed with the next regular dose. Do not double the dose as a makeup for the missed dose.

Consult your doctor if you are thinking of stopping the treatment of Detrusitol XL.

Take Detrusitol XL exactly as recommended by your doctor. Always check with your doctor if you are not sure of how to properly take it.

The common dose of is one 4 mg of Detrutistol prolonged-release capsule daily, except for individuals problems with their kidney or liver, or those with troublesome side effects, in which case your doctor may reduce the dose to 2 mg capsule daily.
