A Doctor's Overview

GP and surgeon, Dr Shane Charles (MBBS, MRCS, PgDip SEM) provides a simple explanation of the medication below:

'Dulcolax Tablets are used to give relief for constipation symptoms. '.

If you think Dulcolax is a treatment that can help you, start an online consultation now for a registered prescriber to review. If treatment is deemed suitable, they can prescribe it, and we can deliver it to you from the comfort of your own home with a range of convenient delivery and payment options for you to choose from. If you have any questions about a medication, you should always consult your doctor with any questions prior to starting treatment, to ensure that it is safe and suitable for you.

Dulcolax is medicine used to treat constipation and the discomfort associated with it. It comes in sachets of dissolvable powder for easy use.

Dulcolax contains a laxative, to increase the function of your bowel and digestive system to encourage your body to pass a stool.

Everyone gets constipated occasionally and while it may not be a dangerous ailment, it is an uncomfortable one. Constipation can lead to bloating, stomach ache, trapped wind and cramps, so to treat it quickly and efficiently with Dulcolax is to get yourself feeling back to normal quickly.

Follow the guidance given in the enclosed patient information leaflet and be sure to read it before commencing use of the medicine.

Take the tablets by swallowing whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not take the tablets with milk and do not consume milk within one hour (before or after) of taking the medication.

Dulcolax contains a laxative called bisacodyl at a strength of 5mg per tablet.

The recommended dose of Dulcolax for constipation is 1 or 2 tablets daily, before bedtime. If you have not taken Dulcolax before then start with a daily dose of 1 tablet and increase to 2 as required.

If you take more Dulcolax than you should then you may experience diarrhoea and subsequent dehydration because of it. If this happens, stop taking Dulcolax and drink plenty of water. If you are worried then you should contact a doctor.

Before taking this medication, you should always first check that it is suitable for you and any of your associated medical conditions. Do not take Dulcolax if:

  • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to bisacodyl or any of the other ingredients in the product
  • You are intolerant to or cannot digest some sugars (as the tablet contains a small amount of lactose and sucrose)
  • You have severe dehydration
  • You have a bowel condition called “ileus” (blockage in the intestine)
  • You have a serious abdominal condition such as appendicitis
  • You have severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting
  • You have a blocked bowel (intestinal obstruction)
  • You have inflammation of the bowel (small or large intestine)

Because of the way that medications interact with each other, you should talk to a doctor before taking Dulcolax if you are already taking any of the following medications:

  • Water tablets (diuretics) such as bendrofluazide or furosemide (frusemide)
  • Steroid medicines such as prednisolone
  • Other laxative medicines

When taking Dulcolax, some people report feeling dizzy or faint. If this happens to you then do not drive or operate machinery, and contact a doctor if it persists.

The most common side effects of Dulcolax are:

  • Abdominal cramps or pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Blood in the stools
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort

You should cease using Dulcolax immediately and contact your doctor if you experience any serious side effects or if you notice signs of an allergic reaction.

You can safely buy Dulcolax online at UK Meds, without the need for a prescription or consultation with a medical professional, however you should adhere to the advice given in the patient leaflet enclosed.
