Frovatriptan Uses

Frovatriptan is a medication for the relief of the symptoms of migraine headaches. It belongs to a class of medications known as selective serotonin agonists.

Frovatriptan does not prevent future migraine attacks or reduce the number of headaches you have.

For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Frovatriptan patient information leaflet.

Frovatriptan is a selective serotonin agonist. It works by constricting blood vessels around the brain, preventing pain signals from being sent to the brain, and blocking the release of certain natural substances that cause nausea, pain, and other symptoms of a migraine.

Frovatriptan Migraine

The main benefit of using Frovatriptan is the relief it provides on the symptoms of a migraine headache. Frovatriptan effectively narrows the blood vessels in the brain to prevent the sending of pain signals to the brain and to block the release of the natural substances that cause nausea, pain, and its other symptoms.

Strictly follow the instructions of your doctor on how to use this medication. It is important that you read also the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medication package when you fill up your prescription. If you do not understand clearly the instructions on how to use this medication, ask your doctor.

Frovatriptan is to be taken by mouth at the first sign of a migraine, as directed by your doctor. It may be taken with or without a meal but it may work faster when it is taken before a meal. The dosage of this medication is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. If your symptoms do now show any signs of improvement, do not take extra doses of this medication before talking to your doctor.

If the symptoms of your migraine are only relieved on a partial basis, or if your headache comes back, you may take another dose after 2 hours, up to a maximum of 3 doses of 7.5 mg in a 24-hour period.

If you have a higher risk of heart problems, your doctor may perform a heart exam before you start taking the medication. Your doctor may also ask you to take the first dose of this medication in his office or clinic to monitor for serious side effects.

If you are using medications for migraine attacks 10 or more days each month, the medications may actually make your headaches worse, or what is known as medication overuse headache.

Do not take medications more often or for longer than what is directed by your doctor. Tell your doctor if you feel the need to use the medication more often, or if it is not working as well, or if your headaches get worse.
