What is Gedarel?
Contraceptive Pill Gedarel
Gedarel is a female contraceptive pill that provides virtually 100% protection from unwanted pregnancy. It is known as a monophasic combination contraceptive that contains the same amount of its two active ingredients, desogestrel and ethinylestradiol. These ingredients are synthetic versions of the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone.
Patient Information Leaflet
For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Gedarel patient information leaflet.
How does Gedarel work?
Gedarel contains two active ingredients, desogestrel and ethinylestradiol. These two ingredients are synthetic versions of the hormones progesterone and oestrogen. These two hormones control the process of ovulation in which an egg is released from the ovaries ready for fertilisation. The ingredients in this pill mimic these hormones to prevent the release of an egg. It also thickens mucus inside of the cervix, making it harder for sperm cells to reach the uterus.
How do you use Gedarel?
Typically, Gedarel works best when it is taken on the first day of your period, however, this is not always possible. By taking the pill within the first five days of your period you will be immediately protected from pregnancy. You should take the tablet once a day for 21 days. After 21 days, you stop taking the pill for seven days. During this time, you will bleed as you normally would when you have a period. Once your seven-day break is over, you then begin the next 21-day course of tablets.
You should take your pill at around the same time every day to ensure that it is effective. If you miss a day you should take your medication as normal, even if it is close to your next dose. Typically, you are protected from pregnancy if you miss one dose.
What are the benefits of Gedarel?
Here are some of the main benefits of Gedarel:
- It is virtually 100% effective at preventing pregnancy.
- It can help to reduce pain felt during periods.
- It can reduce the amount of bleeding during your period.
- It can reduce the risk of uterus, ovary, and colon cancer.
What is the correct dosage of Gedarel?
There are two strengths of Gedarel that you can buy from UK Meds. These are 150mcg/20mcg and 150mcg/30mcg. These numbers outline the amount of ethinylestradiol and desogestrel in each tablet. For example, 150mcg/20mcg means that there is 150mcg of ethinylestradiol and 20mcg of desogestrel in a tablet. We supply packet sizes of 63 and 126 tablets. These are suitable for three courses of treatment and six courses respectively.
How do you start using Gedarel?
If you are starting to use Gedarel when you have not used another hormonal contraceptive for at least a month then you should try to take it on the first day of your period. If you have used another contraceptive pill you should begin to take Gedarel with no breaks from your last pill to ensure that you are protected.
