How does Januvia work?
Sitagliptin is a diabetes medication that belongs to those called DPP-4 inhibitors. Januvia works by increasing incretin released by the intestine. Incretin, a hormone, raises insulin levels when your levels of blood sugar go up and decreases the amount of sugar made by the body. Sitagliptin may be used alone or may be combined with other medications to control the sugar levels in the blood of adults with type 2 diabetes. Januvia should be used as part of an overall diabetes management plan that includes a diet and exercise program.

What are the side effects of Januvia?
Your doctor has prescribed Januvia because he believes that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people use Januvia without having any serious side effects.
Although Januvia by itself will not cause low blood sugar or hypoglycemia, low sugar may occur when Januvia is prescribed along with other diabetes medications. Talk to your doctor if there is a need to lower the dose of Januvia that you are taking.
Symptoms of low blood sugar include:
- Shaking
- Sudden sweating
- Hunger
- Fast heartbeat
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Tingling hands or feet
Always carry glucose tablets or gel to treat hypoglycemia. If you don’t have glucose tablets or gel, you can quickly elevate your blood sugar by consuming table sugar, candy, fruit juice or regular soda. Immediately report to your doctor your reaction to what you consume to raise your sugar level.
Low blood sugar is likely to occur after drinking large amounts of beverages containing alcohol, do not eat enough food, or if you perform unusually heavy exercise. To help prevent hypoglycemia, you should eat your meals on their regular schedule, and you should avoid skipping meals. Consult your doctor to find out your best course of action when you skip a meal.
Symptoms of high blood sugar or hyperglycemia include thirst, confusion, increased urination, flushing, drowsiness, fruity breath odour, or rapid breathing. If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor right away. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medications.
Inform your doctor of any serious side effects, including signs of kidney problems, unusual skin blisters, joint pain, and signs of heart failure.
Get medical help right away if you have very serious side effects, including signs of pancreatitis.
A very serious allergic reaction to Januvia is rare. However, get medical help immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms: rash, severe dizziness, itching or swelling of the face/tongue/throat, or trouble breathing.
Before you start taking this medication, let your doctor know if you are allergic to it, or if you have other allergies. Januvia may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other problems.
Before you start taking this medication, share with your doctor your medical history, especially of heart failure, kidney disease, stones in the gallbladder, or disease of the pancreas.
You may experience dizziness, blurred vision, or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform any activity that requires alertness and clear vision until you are absolutely sure that the tasks can be performed safely.
Limit your alcohol consumption while taking this medication because it can increase your risk of developing low blood sugar.
It may be harder to control your blood sugar when your body is stressed, such as fever, injury, or infection. Consult your doctor because increased stress may need a change in your treatment plan or blood sugar testing.
Januvia should be used only when extremely needed during pregnancy. Pregnancy may result in diabetes or worsen it. Discuss with your doctor how to manage your blood sugar while you are pregnant. Your doctor may order you a different diabetes treatment during the period of your pregnancy.
It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before you start breastfeeding.
Drug interactions may alter the way medicines work or increase the risk for serious side effects. It is important that you share with your doctor a list of all medications you are currently using for him to check if any one of them will interact with Januvia. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of your medicines with first getting the approval of your doctor.
Beta-blocker medications may prevent fast heartbeat that you usually experience when your blood sugar falls too low.
Many medications can affect the levels of your blood sugar, which makes sugar levels hard to control. You should talk to your doctor first before you start, stop, or change any medication. You must check your blood sugar regularly as directed by your doctor and share the results with him.
