A Doctor's Overview

GP and surgeon, Dr Shane Charles (MBBS, MRCS, PgDip SEM) provides a simple explanation of the medication below:

'Zelleta is a type of birth control pill (contraceptive) that contains desogestrel, a form of progesterone. '.

If you think Zelleta is a treatment that can help you, start an online consultation now for a registered prescriber to review. If treatment is deemed suitable, they can prescribe it, and we can deliver it to you from the comfort of your own home with a range of convenient delivery and payment options for you to choose from. If you have any questions about a medication, you should always consult your doctor with any questions prior to starting treatment, to ensure that it is safe and suitable for you.

Zelleta Contraceptive Pill

Zelleta is a female contraceptive pill that falls under the category of being a ‘mini pill’. This is because they rely on a single ingredient, progesterone. The progesterone in Zelleta is actually a synthetic form called desogestrel. As a progesterone-based contraceptive pill, you have a larger window to take your pill, 12 hours to be exact. This pill is perfect for women who cannot, or do not want to, use combination pills.

Zelleta’s active ingredient, desogestrel, is a synthetic version of the female sex hormone progesterone. Desogestrel works by changing the functionality of the female reproductive system. It will increase the amount of mucus that is produced in the cervix, making it harder for sperm cells to reach the uterus. It also changes how an egg is formed in the uterus, meaning that an egg is not released by the ovaries.

Zelleta Pill

When you receive Zelleta, it is important that you read through the patient information leaflet that is provided with the medication in order to understand how to use the medication properly. You should take one Zelleta pill per day, usually at around the same time to ensure it is effective. You should use all of the medication that you have, and should not have a break when you run out of tablets. If you miss a dose you should take another as soon as possible, even if you have to take two tablets in a day.

Here are some of the main benefits of Zelleta:

  • It can be used by people of all ages.
  • It provides relief from premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
  • It can also provide relief from endometriosis.
  • It will minimise the likelihood of you getting a period.

Each pill of Zelleta will contain 75mcg of desogestrel. This will effectively prevent any unwanted pregnancy from unprotected sex. At UK Meds, you can purchase packet sizes of 84 and 168 tablets. This would mean that you would have enough tablets for 12 or 24 weeks of pills respectively.

Here is a handy table for how to start using Zelleta:

How to start using Zelleta

If you have not used another hormonal contraception in the past month:

  • Start taking Zelleta on the first day of your period.
  • If you miss the first day of your period then you will need to use a blocking contraception such as a condom alongside Zelleta for up to 7 days.

You’re stopping any other form of contraception:

  • Take Zelleta straight away after you finish using your other method.
  • If you take a break between contraception methods, use condoms for the first 7 days of Zelleta use.

You’re swapping from a progesterone-only tablet:

  • You can switch the Zelleta straight away.

You have recently had a baby:

  • You can take your first Zelleta tablet between days 21-28 after giving birth.
  • If you start taking Lucette after day 28 then you will need to use a different method of contraception such as a condom for the first 7 days of taking Zelleta.
