    Finasteride FAQs

Below are a selection of your most common questions about Finasteride that we asked Tracy:

How does finasteride work in the body?

Finasteride prevents an enzyme called 5alpha-reductase, from metabolising testosterone into the more stronger androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By reducing the levels of DHT in your body, this could lead to minimising hair loss.

How long does it take for finasteride to start working?

You may see it start to work after 3 to 6 months of continuous use.

What health problems does finasteride help with?

It can also help to shrink enlarged prostate glands in males. This prevents a disease called benign prostatic hyperplasia from developing.

    Is finasteride safe to use?

Yes, it is generally safe to use for a long period of time. However, it is only indicated for use in males, not females or children, unless specified by a specialist.

    How should I take finasteride?

You should take a 1mg tablet daily, at the same time every day.

Is Propecia the same as finasteride?

Yes, it is the branded version of finasteride.

Can finasteride help grow back hair?

It can help grow back hair by reducing the levels of DHT in your body, an androgen which causes hair loss.

Is finasteride good for making hair grow?

A few studies have shown that finasteride has been effective in helping men grow their hair back while being tolerated well in general.

What side effects might happen with finasteride?

The common side effects are having less interest in sex, problems with getting an erection and problems with ejaculation. They may continue even after you stop taking finasteride and you should speak to your doctor about your concerns.

The rare side effects are breast cancer symptoms and depression. These usually happen to less than 1 in 1000 people.

Does finasteride slow down hair loss?

Hair loss is caused by how sensitive your hair follicles are to hormones like DHT which is found in skin, hair follicles and the prostate. If your hair follicles are sensitive to even small levels of DHT, then hair loss occurs. Finasteride lowers DHT levels which improves scalp hair growth and prevents further hair loss.

Does finasteride work on the hairline?

Yes, finasteride should work to grow the hairline back in men.

Are there any long-term side effects from taking finasteride?

Some men have reported breast cancer after taking finasteride. If you notice on your chest any lumps, swelling or pain, or some discharge from your nipples, please contact your doctor.

After stopping finasteride, some men may still have sexual problems. If you do experience this, please let your doctor know.

    Will finasteride affect my contraception?

Finasteride is not known to affect any contraception. However, finasteride is not usually taken by women unless under specialist advice.

    Does finasteride block DHT?

Finasteride blocks the production of DHT, leading to hair growth.

What happens if I stop taking finasteride?

After treatment is discontinued, hair loss will happen in about 6 to 12 months as finasteride does not completely cure hair loss. Do not stop taking finasteride until you speak to your doctor for advice.

Can I drive or ride a bike while taking finasteride?

Yes, finasteride does not cause drowsiness and does not affect your ability to drive or ride a bike.

Can I drink alcohol when taking finasteride?

You can drink alcohol, in moderate amounts, while on finasteride.

Is there any food or drink I should avoid while taking finasteride?

No, you can eat and drink normally while taking finasteride.

Are there natural alternatives to finasteride?

Yes, there have been 11 clinical studies done to discover natural alternatives to finasteride. Saw palmetto, caffeine, cannabidiol oil, melatonin, marine extracts, rosemary oil, procyanidin, and pumpkin seed oil may help with male hair loss. It is recommended to do your own research and consult a healthcare professional before trying any natural remedies as some could interact with other medications you take.

Can changing my lifestyle help with an enlarged prostate?
